Ely, Nevada

See the map below!
Above all else, take into consideration the fact that this ghost town is really "in the middle of nowhere". Rt. 50 is noted as being the loneliest road in the US. You may not see anyone for days out here, or maybe even longer. Travel with friends and carry a lot of supplies and safety equipment. Be careful and have fun!!!!

Hamilton is a ghost town in the desert in the Toiyabe National Forest, White Pine County, Nevada. This is a really beautiful area in the high desert of Nevada. Wild horses, (mustangs), thrive here. There are other towns just to the south, as well as more mines. This was basically a silver mining area.
The mines were discovered in 1865. In the beginning there were some 10,000 people in the Hamilton area. Hamilton was incorporated and became the county seat in 1869.  After a fire in 1873 that destroyed the main part of town it never recovered.

 <<< After 1900

The town site is at an elevation of 8,058 ft. (2,456 meters). People established themselves in huts and caves on Treasure Hill (see the map enlargement). There was even a brick courthouse constructed in 1870. After the fire the White Pine County seat was moved to Ely.
