If you do a lot of traveling in the desert, either hiking or just in your 4 wheel drive vehicle, you should have at least enough backpacks stowed for the people that will be with you. If you should get stuck or break down you may want to walk out. You'll need a way to carry your water, camera gear and maybe even a snack with you. You can purchase a small backpack to serve this purpose without a large expense. Here are some styles that you might find useful.
Even if you want a name brand, but inexpensive backpack, like the "Kelty" pictured here to the right, they can easily be found and make a good choice for an emergency walk out of a remote area. We keep 3 small backpacks like this in our vehicle. They've come in handy a number of times.
This is a full blown military back pack and still very reasonably priced. It has the advantage of many different zippered pockets which could be used to carry a laptop, first aid kit and more. All these backpacks are available in the Amazon Store below.
This backpack is great for hiking as it carries it's own hydration system (water storage). The hydration pack pictured below can be purchased separately or can be included in the backpack shown here.
Commonly called a "fanny pack" these can very useful also. Carry some first aid equipment, your wallet or even a GPS. See the Amazon Store below for more!
Why an Amazon Store? Because it's one of the few stores on the Internet that has all the different alternatives, photos, specifications, etc. You could buy a backpack elsewhere, but Amazon's prices are reasonable and shipping is free for items over $25.00 and they're return policy is outstanding. Even if you don't buy here, this will give you the best place to see all the alternatives.
