   Califonia's first Spanish mission at San Diego was established in 1769. California's fame came in 1848 when James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill, starting the California Gold Rush. Best places to visit in the desert are as follows:  Imperial Sand Dunes, Bradshaw Trail, Anza Borrego State Park - Mud Caves.  California is a great place to visit in the desert. Death Valley is certainly worthy of mention. It is 285 ft. below sea level and is very scenic.
