Mira Cool Bandanas
How they work
During the summer months in the desert Southwest temperatures can reach 117 degrees for a week or more. Usually low humidity coupled with the extreme heat can cause dehydration and heat stress. Dehydration can only be avoided by consuming large amounts of water each day. The heat stress can be avoided by using a cooling bandana made by Mira Cool. Do these really work? How long do they last? Just a day or two? Can you use them more than once?
There are other brands on the market, and Amazon sells a few of them, but the Miracool bandanas work great and are resonably priced..
Each bandana is filled with small crystals that swell up when moistened. They then evaporate causing a cooling effect around your neck. This cools the blood rushing to your head. Your head is your bodies radiator, so this cools you down. They last a minimum of 2 days after soaking them. They can be used over and over again. We've had our original 2 Mira Cool bandanas for 3 years now and they still work great. If you sweat a lot then these are a must.
Using them is simple: put cold water into a glass (see note *) and soak them for 20 minutes and your good to go for a couple of days. Note* - We use a ziplock plastic sandwich bag, so we can rewet them on the second or third day, just keep the water and the bag in your cooler. This works great.
Once you soak the bandana you just tie it around your neck as shown here. At first it will feel ice cold, then it'll just feel great. When soaking the bandana don't use water with ice in it or use a freezer as this may ruin the crystals in the bandana and it's not necessary.
Sometimes we'll cut off the top of a plastic water bottle and dump some cold water into it to get the bandanas working while we're on the road.

The price of these makes them very desirable. At around $3 each and they work great. If you're living or traveling in the desert southwest you really should look into these bandanas.
