If you were in the desert near the town of Ocotillo then you should have stopped at the Cactus Festival. Earlier in the moring they had a Salsa competition and for the remainder of the day they had a fairly large area set up with booths for any one that wanted to sell desert items. Among them were tee shirts, walking sticks (very unusual ones) and a photographer that was selling some very nice photos in the desert. There was another gentleman selling a potion for keeping rabbits out of your garden, just to mention a few. He was eating a big cheese burger that made me hungry. So after walking around the booths for a while we headed over to the local burger stand. $2.00 - how good could they be? They were great, and they were cooking them over an open fire with all the fixings to go with it. What a deal! A very nice gentleman and his wife were in front of me (see the pictures below) and I think they were there before. They sure looked happy! They also had a salsa stand with some great salsa. Made like real salsa is made, not the stuff that's made in New York City. Fresh vegetables and the works. And to top it all off they had a singer there that was really good! Once again see the pictures below.
Next year if your in the area, don't miss the Ocotillo Cactus Festival WEB SITE It's held just north of the town of Ocotillo on the Imperial Hwy at the community building. You can't miss it, and it's just a few miles to the southeastern end of the Anza Borrego State Park - if you keep going north on the Imperial Hwy. Even though there were quite a few people there it wasn't so crowded you couldn't enjoy it. If nothing else don't miss the salsa and cheese burgers!
Another look at a local happening in the desert. Just off of Interstate 8 on the Imperial Hwy ( S2) 25 miles West of El Centro |
