In The Desert
Summer Get Away
For those that live in the desert!
If you live in the desert then you'll know what this is about. Putting up with those 115 degree days is no fun. Some people claim to like it. Okay but it's still nice to get away during the worst part of the hot days to somewhere with a cooler climate. We'll take a quick look at some places where you might like to spend a week or more.

If you live anywhere in the southern Sonoran Desert, and inexpensive, quick get away would be the Colorado River, swimming or maybe a tubing trip down the river would cool you off for the day. Not a long refief, but a nice one.
This is great place to unwind and cool off. Now the temp's outside may be hot but there is so much to do inside. You can have fun, loose your kid's inheritence, or just enjoy good meals and watch a show. Nice thing about this is it's location and it's easy to get to. A lot of bus tours go here.
Stateline, we found this to be a great place to gamble, at least years ago. Decent shows and entertainment, plus decent food, not great, but passable. Swimming pools and inexpensive rates are the main draw here.
Doesn't matter what you'd like to do or see, you can find it here. It doesn't matter what kind of food you like, you can eat it here. Walking the strip in the summer is better done at night and of course all the excitement is inside, so it's cool there. You can spend a week or more here, and there are a lot of surrounding areas to see.
Yes we always won big here, and that just makes the stay more fun. But, and there is always a but. They got rid of the machines that we used to win on, wonder why? So now you're on your own.
Valley of Fire is just north of Las Vegas, you'll notice we're headed north. This is a great place to look at beautiful rock formations that are not far off the main road and the convenience of your vehicle. This was taken in a parking lot!
This a great destination in the summer months. You can bring your boat, or rent one here and spend a few days on the water, swimming, water boarding, sking, etc. Lake Powell is another destination that you might consider for this kind of activity.
Valley of Fire
If you stay up on top of the south rim it won't be as hot as it is down in the desert. You can also stay in a nearby town that is at a higher elevation and also cooler. There is a lot to see here, so spend some time in this cooler climate, you won't regret it.
This is the western most part of the Grand Canyon and it's on the North side of the canyon. It can get very hot here. You may want to plan on doing this in the Spring or early summer. The elevations are not as high here either.
Zion National Park
It can get hot here in the summer, but not as hot as in the lower deserts. And it also depends on the elevation in the part you visit. Different parts being at different elevations.
Bryce Canyon National Park
A little farther north and higher yet. Here's a grouple of people just walking back from an overlook. Photo was taken in August. Not bad here during the sumer months.
San Diego, California
Coronado Island and beach. This is an easy drive from the lower desert in southern California and Arizona. The tempertures are always mild and the water in the Pacific Ocean is great. A lot of people take a week or weekend and go over there for a break from the heat. And what nice break. It's hard to imagine that just a 2 hour drive could make this kind of difference. Also note that on the way you might want to stop and look at Pine Valley just north of Interstate 8 in the mountains. The weather here is also a lot cooler in the summer months. Nice camping too.
Does this make you feel cooler? Maybe you could find a nice summer vacation home like one of these to spend your summer in. A lot of people travel to the states of Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Northern New Mexico in the summer time. Look into this for yourself. It's always great to get out and travel, and it's even better when your doing it to improve your climate. The lower deserts are great, but they are nicer in the winter months. Other summer destinations in the upper states are also a consideration. Don't hesitate to get out of Dodge.
This is the time of the year to start thinking about this. Can you get away for week or two, maybe longer. Consider this kind of get away, if nothing else -- to keep your sanity. Have fun.
Let's get out of here!
