DeNoise 5, Topaz Labs
Plug-in, review by in the desert
As you can see the presets (shown on the left) are pretty simple. In the right hand panel are the adjustments to change the parameters. This is a complex, but easy to use program that can enhance your photos and rid them of noise..
If you try this programs "Trial Version" don't hesitate to adjust the sliders on the right, we did for the above images. This is an easy to learn program with a lot of nice options.
Great Plug-in, give it a try HERE
There are two sets of examples below. The first one is a typical shot that we used Tone Mapping on. See below.
Noise is getting more controlled in cameras now. It is not so much of a problem as it was years ago. But if you like to use Tone Mapping or make HDR photos then you'll have noise. Mostly in the sky portions of the photos. So why use Tone Mapping? It can greatly enhance a photograph and bring out the best in clouds and detail in landscapes. HDR on the other hand can lighten shadow areas and greatly enhance the Dynamic Range of an image. But along with this you usually get at least a small amount of noise in the sky or on solid colors in the photo.
Try a preset, then make adjustments in the right hand panel of the plug-in.
This is a typical shot of a mountain area on a cloudy day. Although this is a small sample you'll still notice that there is a lack of detail in the foreground, trees, house shrubs, and the sky is kind of flat looking.
Greatly improved but now there is large amount of noise in the blue sky of this photo. It is hard to tell looking at these small images so see below for full sized crops of this image -- before and after using DeNoise 5. I didn't try to restore detail in this example. You can clearly see the improvement n the sky.
Flat looking with nice detail in the tree and sage brush in the foreground. We thought this shot really needed some help. So we ran it through Adjust 5 and ------
Granted this doesn't make it a prize winner, but it does show what kind of enhancements are possible. There is a cost. This image acquired a lot of noise when it was changed, all of it in the sky. Below is a 100% crop of this image before running it through DeNoise 5. See below for more on this.
It's clear how much noise was injected into this image, and below you'll see what a great job De Noise 5 did of getting rid of the noise. In our opinion the original image was worthless, now it's usable! Also note that the detail is still in the tree and sage brush.
