Zion National Park, Utah
This is an inter-active Google Map. You can zoom in / out
Just East of the town Virgin, Utah on Rt. 9 you'll enter one of the most scenic National Parks in the USA. Towering mountains, buttes, and peaks of different colors abound here. This an easy drive and shouldn't be missed if you like great scenery and wild animals. The town of Virgin and Rockville is also worth a stop. This one of the best day trips you can make in the desert.
Just before we got to the end of the road we saw a herd of deer in the woods. On busy days you won't be able to take your own car into the lower part of the park. You'll have to take the shuttle bus for the tour. Either way it's a wonderland of sights.
If you bypass the lower part of the park; or go to the lower part then go through the rest of the park you'll be able to travel in your own vehicle. Climbing up out of the valley is quite an experience in itself! They put in a tunnel though the face of a cliff to bypass a waterfall; and it's really hard to imagine how it was accomplished. You'll have to see it for yourself to believe it!
Once on top, the scenery gets really intense! Layers of red sandstone intermingled with white sandstone. And trees growing out of rocks everywhere you look. And don't forget this is only a short drive out of St. George, Utah.
Here's another example of the layering that is on top of the mountains here. All these photos were taken right from the road! And it is a great place to go hiking. A lot of people find spots to pull over then take to the hills on foot. Who would have guessed that you could find this kind of scenery in the desert.
Another of the many different areas with different rock formations. It's amazing how the trees can put down roots and grow in this rocky area of the mountains. There is very little loose soil up here.
This the last place you'd expect to see a group of Bighorn Sheep eating shrubs, but here they are! What a pleasant surprise this was. Keep your eyes open as these guys (girls) were a good 1/4 mile from the road when we spotted them To us this was a good enough reason to take day trips up here to Zion from St. George, Utah.
Checkerboard Mesa! You'll see this on the way out of the park. There are quite a few wide pull-overs where you can stop while going through the park. Now you have to make up your mind where to go from here. Continue on to Kanab and come back on Rt. 59 to Hurricane or turn around and go back the way you just came.
If you stay in Hurricane then by all means try the Travel Lodge on N. Main St. and Rt. 9. Reasonably priced and nice rooms. There are a lot of Motels in St. George also. A lot to chose from. Have fun ------
